What is Stormwater Management?

For the purpose of the new annual stormwater management services charge, stormwater management is defined as the management of the quantity and quality of stormwater that flows off a parcel of privately owned, developed urban land.

My property has fall to the rear, what can I do?

If your property is in a greenfill area, then you generally dont need to worry too much as the developer would have supplied all properties with stormwater management controls.

Some properties may have easements downstream and Statiker can look into this for you and advise you of this.

Other developments are all as per council’s requirements. Statiker can inform you of the procedure required once we receive a set of architectural and survey drawings. Please come in and visit us to go through this in detail.

What causes floods?

Flooding occurs in known floodplains because of prolonged rainfall over several days. Intense rainfall over a short period of time, or a debris jam causes rivers or streams to overflow and flood the surrounding area. Severe thunderstorms can bring heavy rain, or tropical cyclones can bring intense rainfall to the coastal and inland cities and towns.

Flash floods occur within six hours of heavy rain events, or after a dam or levee failure, and flash floods can catch people unprepared.

As land is converted from fields or woodlands to roads and parking lots, it loses its ability to absorb rainfall. Urbanisation increases the amount of impervious areas, causing runoff to be two to six times over what would occur on natural terrain. During periods of urban flooding, streets can become swift moving rivers and can be dangerous for drivers. Because of the buoyancy effects and power of moving water, even a foot of moving water can be enough to carry away some cars.

Several factors contribute to flooding. Two key elements are rainfall intensity and duration. Intensity is the rate of rainfall, and duration is how long the rain lasts. Topography, soil conditions, and ground cover also play important roles. Most flash flooding is caused by slow-moving thunderstorms, thunderstorms repeatedly moving over the same area, or heavy rains from hurricanes and tropical storms. Floods, on the other hand, can be slow- or fast-rising, but generally develop over a period of hours or days.

What is a stormwater management service?

A ‘stormwater management service’ is a service to manage the quantity and/or quality of stormwater that flows off land, and may sometimes include a service to manage the re-use of stormwater for any purpose (On residential homes and smaller developments, this is required due to the requirements of the BASIX Certificate).
